Peter Runcie

Business Leader - Future Communities, Data61 / CSIRO

R&D driving collaboration

Many Australian communities, like those in other countries, are experimenting with and implementing new smart technologies. As individual projects emerge from pilots and proofs of concept we now look to new considerations such as scale, standards, security and privacy. We also seek to make broader impact through the integration of many of these technologies together to address some of the more complex challenges in our communities.

Data61, together with its sister science divisions within CSIRO, is focusing its attention to how Australia can maximise the benefits of smart city technology for its communities – urban, regional and remote.

Peter works closely with the research community, industry and governments to apply transformative technologies to social and industrial challenges.

He has been involved in various aspects of smart cities for a number of years and has an interest in using data science to better understand increasingly complex urban systems. The human aspects of technology adoption and interaction are also of specific interest.

Peter has a technical background and is an inventor on over 25 granted patents in voice and video communications, data networking, biometrics with others pending in structural health monitoring and data analytics.
